Special Programs

Trinity Charter School offers tutorial, remedial and compensatory education. However, TCS services are offered within a secure residential setting.

All students are served on campus and provided individualized academic and behavioral interventions designed to address academic and behavioral issues in order to return the student to a less restrictive setting as soon as possible. (Unaccompanied refugee minors are supported at the Bokenkamp campus, which offers Bilingual education.)

In addition, the special needs of students are addressed through 504 and LPAC committees, Title I, Dyslexia, ESL, and Special Education. You may view information regarding Special Education services by visiting the Legal Framework link, which includes a link to Notice of Procedural Safeguards and Guide to Admission, Review and Dismissal Process.

Because TCS is located within a secure residential treatment center, all students are offered an individualized program and a goal of returning as possible to the LRE, with the added benefit of having academic and emotional supports in place to enhance opportunities for success.

Toward that end the program includes diagnostic and accelerated instruction, progress monitoring, low student/teacher ratio, dual enrollment, distance learning, student goal setting, credit recovery, alternative methods for completing classes, intense behavior management interventions based on Boys and Girls Town strategies, Behavior Mastery Class, individual and group therapy, recreation therapy, access to a psychiatrist, and medication monitoring.

Special programs offered include Title I, 504, and Special Education. (ESL is addressed at Bokenkamp.) Related services include speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and adaptive PE as indicated. All students are served on campus.

If there is an identified disability and educational need, students may be considered for Special Education services. Due to the restrictive nature of the placement, student paperwork is reviewed upon entrance to determine needs and consideration for a variety of programs and individual needs. Student progress is also reviewed regularly to determine if the student is progressing as anticipated.

It is our belief that in many cases these students have not been in a stable environment long enough to address their multi-faceted needs and may need the specialized programs and protections afforded under Special Education.

If you have any specific concerns, please talk to the appropriate campus principal. Referrals for Special Education can be made by the parent, guardian, school or agency working with the student.

To qualify for Special Education, students must have been evaluated in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004, and have a disability condition. Predominantly, students who are sent to TCS have an emotional disability.

Special education is offered at no cost to parents and is, by definition, specially designed instruction to address the unique needs of a child that result from the child’s disability and are designed to ensure access of the child to the general curriculum, so that he or she can meet the educational standards within the jurisdiction of the public agency that apply to all children.
